Friendship has a special meaning in Russian culture. When we say “friend” we mean not only a person, who is nice to spend time with, or has the same interests. To be friends is to be always ready to help each other. There’s a saying in Russia “don’t have a hundred of rubles, but have a hundred of friends.
Many Russians think that their main feature is hospitality. Russian people always try to give the guest the best things they can offer: the best food, drink or place. When they meet they shake hands, embrace and kiss each other.
When guests come, Russians try to do their best so that their guests could feel at home. They put the tastiest dishes on the table (often everything they have).
The doors of Russian homes are always open for guests. You don’t need to call in advance if you want to see your friends, you can just come and the hosts will offer you a cup of tea. At the same time, it’s easy to go to some place without calling and nobody will think it’s impolite. At the parties people not only eat (a lot!) but talk, dance and sing. They behave emotionally and don’t like when you behave reserved. They like to argue and not always come to a compromise.
Russians are very sociable. When they travel for a long distance, they discuss their problems with unknown people.
Parents play a very important role in the life of their children. They take care of their children for all their lives. Children usually don’t like this super-care, but when they grow up and become parents themselves, they behave in the same way. When children become adult, they begin to take care of their parents. Old people prefer to live with their children and there is no place where they are treated better.
Another national feature of Russians is optimism and belief in a happy future. Russians say that hope dies last even if the situation is the pits. They believe that they will overcome all the difficulties, and will live in peace.
They never give up. Humour always helps. They laugh at everything but most of all themselves.
Russia is not the land where people deeply respect the order. From time to time they violate traffic order. Russians like to risk and risky people. They think boring to follow the rules. At the cinema or theatre they can take not their, but other, more comfortable place.
Russians don’t like queueing and try to avoid it. Some of them worry and show negative emotions, others try to invent something not to stand in the queue. But others have to and they do it patiently. They say that patience is the most important feature of Russian character.
Another negative trait of Russian character is their laziness. Russians are lazy. This belief is wide spread not only abroad but also in Russia. Russians themselves think that they are lazy. But they become very enthusiastic if they are interested in their work.
